The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published a report on Stoke Mandeville Hospital’s children’s emergency department, following an inspection in June 2023.

The CQC carried out this focused inspection of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust’s children’s emergency department in response to concerns that had been raised about the safety and quality of the service.

What inspectors found

The service was not rated at this inspection. However, inspectors found that children and young people received safe care.

They reported that:

  • Paediatric staff had training in key skills. Staff usually assessed risks to patients, acted on them and kept good care records.
  • Leaders ran services well using reliable information systems. Staff felt respected, supported and valued.
  • The service did not always have the optimum number of staff but had procedures in place to ensure that staff levels were safe.

Room for improvement

However, inspectors also found that the children’s emergency department could make improvements in some areas.

  • Incidents were not always thoroughly reviewed or investigated. This meant that areas for improvement and learning were not always identified to prevent further occurrences.
  • Staff did not always use translator services when required, and there was no accessible information to inform children, young people and their families this service was available. This meant there was a risk of breakdowns in communication that that could affect people’s understanding.
  • Staff were not always clear about their roles and accountabilities when reporting incidents according to the Trust’s own policies.
