St Leonards Care Home, a residential care home in Aylesbury, has been rated ‘requires improvement’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The service provides accommodation and personal care for older people, including people with dementia. When the CQC visited, 44 people were using the service.

Why the CQC inspected

The CQC inspected St Leonards because it was made aware of concerns about the care people were receiving and staffing levels at the home. Inspectors therefore conducted a focused inspection, which looked at three of the five key questions usually used to assess whether a service is performing well.

These were:

  • Is the service safe?
  • Is it effective?
  • Is it well led?

What inspectors found

People who were living at St Leonards, and their relatives, told inspectors they were happy with their care.

Residents said they felt safe, and that their needs were met by a well-managed service.

However, inspectors found room for improvement at the home.

  • Risks to people were not consistently identified, mitigated or reviewed.
  • Staff were not suitably recruited and did not have their competencies assessed for the tasks they were involved in.
  • People were not supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives – and staff did not support them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests.
  • Records were not consistently managed, with some not updated in response to changes in people’s needs.

The service received ratings of ‘requires improvement’ against all three key questions considered at this inspection. It was therefore rated ‘requires improvement’ overall.

What happens next?

The CQC will request an action plan from St Leonards, setting out what the home will do to improve standards of quality and safety.

It will continue to monitor information about the service. This will help to inform when the next inspection of St Leonards takes place.

despite the poor rating in some areas, my husband and I are highly satisfied with the care, attention and stimulation given to my mum. A happy cheerful place with lovely staff. Highly recommend.
