Affection Care Services has been rated ‘requires improvement’ after an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Affection Care Services is a domiciliary care service that provides personal care to people living in their own homes. At the time of the inspection in April 2023, the service was supporting 23 people who lived in the Princes Risborough or High Wycombe areas of Buckinghamshire.

Five key questions

The CQC uses five key questions to assess how well a service is working. They are:

  • Is the service safe?
  • Is it effective?
  • Is it caring?
  • Is it responsive?
  • Is it well led?

At this inspection, Affection Care Services was only assessed against the questions concerning safety and whether it was well led. It was rated ‘requires improvement’ for both.

The ratings awarded against the other questions remain the same as those given at its last comprehensive inspection in 2019.

Affection Care Services therefore received an overall rating of ‘requires improvement’.

What inspectors found

While people shared positive feedback about their care with inspectors, the CQC reported several problems.

  • Not all staff had received pre-employment checks prior to supporting people on behalf of Affection Care Services. Robust and safe recruitment processes were not always used.
  • 50% of staff who fed back to inspectors said that their training did not prepare them to support people safely.
  • Records relating to medicine were not always accurate. One person was regularly given pain medication too soon.
  • People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives, and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible – but policies and systems could be improved to further support this practice.
