Healthwatch Bucks turns 10 years old this week. During the past decade, we’ve heard thousands of stories from people in our community about health and social care – feedback that’s helped us make a difference to how local services are run.

To mark this special birthday, we want to celebrate the work we’ve done, the people who have helped us make a difference and the impact we’ve had on local health and social care.

Introducing Mike Etkind

Mike Etkind is a Healthwatch Hero who has been volunteering with us for six years.

Here, he tells us in his own words about what he’s done and why he’s proud to support Healthwatch Bucks.

I’ve been a volunteer with Healthwatch Bucks for six years now, and I’ve found it stimulating and enjoyable. It has introduced me to all sorts of things relating to health and wellbeing throughout Buckinghamshire, and I’ve met lots of interesting people.

It’s also great to think I’m doing something useful with some of my free time. Here are a few of the activities I’ve been involved with:

  • I was the Healthwatch Bucks representative on a PLACE audit of Wycombe Hospital.  This involved spending a day at the hospital in the company of NHS staff, rating some of the facilities.
  • I worked with the Healthwatch team to undertake a mystery shop of out-of-hours information from GP surgeries, and to write the ‘Open and Shut’ report. The report made recommendations with the aim of making it easier for patients to find information.
  • I represented Healthwatch Bucks on the Communications Advisory Panel of Bucks NHS Trust. This developed revised guidance for NHS staff on writing hospital leaflets that are clear and simple to understand.
  • I advised Bucks Healthcare Trust on making their webpage about NHS Continuing Healthcare easier to navigate for the general public.

I’d like to pay tribute to the dedicated, hard-working and supportive team at Healthwatch Bucks and congratulate them on their 10th anniversary.

Help us make a difference

The whole team at Healthwatch Bucks thanks Mike for his generous support, and we look forward to working with him in 2023-24 and beyond.

As a volunteer-led organisation, we value the contributions of local people who help to make sure our work is as effective and impactful as possible.

If you’re interested in getting involved at Healthwatch Bucks, take a look at our director vacancies, subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on social media. We’ll soon be recruiting for diverse volunteers who can help us reach more people in communities we don’t often hear from – so stay tuned!
