Fremantle Court, a residential care home in Stoke Mandeville, has been rated ‘requires improvement’ by the Care Quality Commission.

The purpose-built home for adults is run by the Fremantle Trust. It provides nursing and personal care, as well as treatment for disease, disorders and injuries. The home also provides care for people living with dementia and physical disabilities. At the time of the inspection, in January 2023, there were 79 people using the service.

The CQC assessed Fremantle Court against five key criteria. These help inspectors to judge whether a service is:

  • Safe
  • Effective
  • Caring
  • Responsive and
  • Well led.

While the CQC rated Fremantle Court ‘good’ in the caring and responsive categories, the service was rated ‘requires improvement’ for safety, effectiveness and leadership. Fremantle Court therefore received a rating of ‘requires improvement’ overall.

Inconsistency has affected outcomes

Inspectors noted that the provider has struggled to retain registered managers for some time – and that the consequent inconsistency in leadership had affected outcomes for residents as well as staff morale.

The CQC has requested an action plan from Fremantle Court that sets out what will be done to improve standards of quality and safety at the care home. The CQC will also continue to monitor information it receives about the service, which will help to inform when another inspection should take place.

The full report on Fremantle Court is available from the CQC website.
