The Royal Star & Garter Home in High Wycombe has been rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

The care home is a purpose-built residential facility that provides personal and nursing care for up to 74 people. Three of its six units are dedicated to caring for people with dementia. The service also provides support to veterans and their families.

The Royal Star & Garter Home (RSG) was inspected in October 2022. At the time of the inspection, there were 56 people using the service.

Outstanding care

Inspectors found that the provider has invested in ‘champion roles’ to cover all aspects of the service. The people in these jobs actively support care home staff to ensure people experience excellent healthcare outcomes and enjoy an outstanding quality of life.

According to the CQC’s report, RSG staff take pride in promoting and enhancing people’s lives and always look for ways of empowering them. Employees at the care home are highly motivated, inspectors said, and offer exceptionally kind, compassionate care and support.

RSG also provides outstanding, innovative, person-centred end-of-life care based on best practice. The care home has been awarded the national Gold Standard Framework (GSF) for its work in this area.

Promoting equality, leading by example

In addition, RSG understands the needs of different people and groups. The CQC’s report says it delivers care and support in a way that meets those needs and promotes equality.

Leaders at the care home were also visible and effective, inspectors found. They are clear about how they expect the service to be run and lead their team by example.

As well as being rated ‘outstanding’ overall, RSG was rated outstanding for being effective, caring, responsive and well-led. It was rated ‘good’ for safety.

An example for other services

Hazel Roberts, CQC head of inspection for adult social care, said:

The care provided to people by The Royal Star & Garter Home was outstanding. We found an open culture at the service, where staff and people felt able to raise concerns and make suggestions.

People told us they were involved in decisions about their care, helping them to maintain their independence and stay in control of their lives.

We found this to be a well-run and supportive service that focused on people’s needs. Other services can look to it as an example of the high standards of care people should expect.
