Byron House Care Home, Aylesbury, has been rated ‘outstanding’ following its most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Byron House is a residential care home that provides personal and nursing care for up to 28 people in a specially adapted building. The service supports older people across three floors, some of whom are living with dementia. At the time of the inspection, in November 2022, there were 25 people using the service.

What inspectors found

Inspectors found that people at the care home received care from highly skilled staff who had received training based on their needs. Staff recruitment and development are a priority, so staff at Byron House are competent and confident in delivering person-centred care.

Practices at the care home are in line with current legislation, guidelines and best practice, according to inspectors. The home has a warm, welcoming atmosphere which is promoted by caring, compassionate staff.

The CQC reports that people who work at Byron House are “trained to care”, with everyone – including maintenance and domestic staff – aware of who residents are and how their needs can be supported.

According to the CQC, Byron House’s vision and values put people at the heart of the service. The care home shows a strong commitment to providing personalised care and sees people’s relatives as partners in this.

Enhancing quality of life

The CQC’s inspectors also found that staff at Byron House Care Home excel at managing people’s complex needs. These include distressed behaviours. Effective distraction techniques have a positive impact on care home residents’ wellbeing. Inspectors reported that they saw “many examples” where staff successfully enhanced people’s quality of life.

Arrangements for social activities at Byron House meet people’s individual needs and help ensure they can live as full a life as possible. The CQC’s report states that the service had gone “the extra mile” to find out what people had done in the past, evaluating this to see whether it could accommodate similar activities and make them happen.

People at Byron House Care Home are supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives. Staff support them in the least restrictive way possible and act in their best interests.

Exceptional leadership

Byron House Care Home’s leadership was also deemed exceptional by inspectors. Leaders have developed a dedicated staff team, inspectors reported. People who work at Byron House are committed to providing outstanding care, feel part of a dedicated team and are proud to provide excellent care.

Bryon House Care Home was rated ‘outstanding’ across three of the CQC’s key categories for inspection: caring, responsive and well-led. It was rated ‘good’ for safety and effectiveness.
