We released our report on Experiences of social prescribing in Buckinghamshire in November 2022. In January 2023, we received a response to our recommendations from Buckinghamshire Council.

Our report explained that most people who were referred to a social prescriber were happy or very happy to meet with them. Most people also had a positive impression of social prescribing following their use of the service.

To help improve access to social prescribing services in Bucks, we made a series of recommendations to Buckinghamshire Council. These included:

  • Continue to work with voluntary, community and social enterprises (VCSEs), community boards and social prescribers to identify where more support is needed within communities
  • Consider supplementing the support currently provided to help people complete forms to access benefits such as Attendance Allowance, Carers Allowance and Blue Badges
  • Identify gaps in the provision of affordable and / or accessible transport in the county, with an aim to work with VCSEs to plug them
  • Look to make the Community Transport Hub more accessible to the public – e.g., by putting the database online.

Buckinghamshire Council’s response

In its response to our recommendations, Buckinghamshire Council has committed to actioning them. It says it will do this through business as usual and the recommissioning of the Prevention Matters service.

In a letter to Healthwatch Bucks, Gillian Quinton, Corporate Director – Adults & Health, said:

The council welcomes this report from Healthwatch Bucks, which explores residents’ experiences of social prescribing in Buckinghamshire. We thank you for the recommendations laid out in the report, which provide us with individuals’ experiences to further enhance the social prescribing services in Buckinghamshire.

We’d like to thank Buckinghamshire Council for its response to our report.
