The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak changed the way care was provided to those who live in care homes.

Healthwatch Bucks wanted to hear about the experiences of people who lived in, or normally visited, Buckinghamshire care homes.

We ran an online survey from March 16th to May 31st when care homes made the greatest changes.

We asked people about:

  • communication between residents, staff, and family
  • movement around the care home
  • meals and snacks
  • activities and visitors
  • keeping safe, hygiene and staffing levels.

We had a great response to the survey.

This report summarises the feedback we received and makes recommendations aimed at improving life for those living in a care home or those who would normally visit them. We have asked commissioners and care home providers for their responses to our recommendations. We will publish these when we receive them.

You can read about what people told us in our main report below. There is also a summary report showing just the high-level findings and our recommendations.

The continued isolation of older people in care is creating a human rights crisis. It is over 8 months since care homes across England closed their doors to visitors and many older people have had little meaningful contact with their families/close friends since. My own father’s health and mental state has gone down rapidly in the Nursing Home where he is in Buckinghamshire during this time. The restrictions have separated life-long partnerships and alienated us from him. He has no vital support from us. This infringes the right to family life (protected by Article 8 in the Human Rights Act), both for older people in care and for their family/friends. We are furious and sickened by what is happening. The treatment of our elderly is a disgrace to a civilised nation !

Thank you for your comments. We have received very little feedback about social care services over the last year. If you could let us know the name of the nursing home, we can record your comment more accurately (yes, it is a bit bureaucratic!). You can let us know here or use the Your story form.
