Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT) has funded us to apply our established ‘Enter and View’ approach to a series of five ‘On the spot’ visits.

This is the third in a series of visits. We talked to people in the Accident and Emergency department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. We also spent time observing what was going on.

Our report summarises the range of views we heard. It also includes BHT’s response to our recommendations.

There would be less pressure on SM A&E if the admin staff did their job. Turning up for my third orthopaedic appt, reception told me they had no record of me or my previous visits and that I would have to go and start over again in A&E. We had no choice, so in my plaster cast, I waited several hours to see a doctor to re-refer me to Orthopaedics. Does the NHS really need more cash or just efficient admin staff to do their job?
Others I have spoken to have suffered similar experiences at the hands of incompetent office staff.

My experience of its A&E was very traumatic. After arriving with a serious spinal injury the receiving staff were excellent with treatment and assurance. The moment was spoiled when I looked at the clock at 3pm to see a nurse ordering a pair of shoes on e-bay on the A&E COMPUTER TERMINALS.

I was moved to a single room where I was bombarded with canned music from the café down stairs. My meal was soup which was served in an insulated jug, unfortunately it contained a plastic lid from the soup can that could have choked me. Physio support was poor and I had to find out myself how to fit my back brace. Overall my experience at SMH was very poor.
