In November 2017 we released our “Making the most of community pharmacy” report. On December 14th 2017 we received a response to our recommendations from NHS England South
In the report, we made four recommendations to commissioners, the Bucks Local Pharmaceutical Committee (LPC) and local pharmacists:
- review our detailed findings to understand more about the specific groups who don’t know about their services
- do more to ensure people in all age groups know about the range of services pharmacies offer
- look at how to raise awareness of the services on offer that can help people to stay healthy
- check the patient feedback on our website at regular intervals and use it to improve their service
NHS England, as the commissioner of local community pharmacies, have agreed to raise recommendations 1 and 3 with the Bucks LPC. They have also agreed to monitor patient feedback on the Healthwatch Bucks website and bring relevant feedback to the attention of contractors.
You can read the full reply from NHS England below, including a detailed response to recommendation 2. However, we were interested to note that:
This winter for the first time, the “Stay Well” campaign will include a second phase focused on pharmacy. It will run in January 2018, promote services available at pharmacies and target mothers with children under 5, encouraging them to go to the pharmacy in the first instance.
We’d like to thank NHS England for their timely response to these recommendations.
