Yesterday my near three year old son had an appointment with the Orthoptics Outpaitent department at Amersham Hospital. I am aware that Amersham Hospital has a small car park so I was wary of arriving in good time in case I needed to wait for a space. However as our appointment was at 8.45am getting a parking space was not problem. When I was at the car park meter it was not accepting one of my pound coins and I was a little worried I had not put enough time on my ticket. The car park attendant was close by and approached me to see if he could help. He told me not to worry if I went a little over and that he would not penalise me. This was very reassuring.

When we went into the hospital they had only just opened so no one was at the reception desk. However there were staff around who acknowdleged us and told me they would be a few minutes. After a few minutes we were signed in and the receptionist directed us to our waiting area. The waiting area in the Eye Department Outpatients was light and airy, clean and tidy, and had a children’s area with toys and books. Our appointment was only 6 minutes behind schedule. The staff were friendly, answered all my questions and put my son’s comfort and secureness at utmost priority. One they found out the issue they informed me that my son needed glasses and took the time to explain why, and that they would see him every 2-3 months to monitor him. We left the hospital with a few minutes to spare on our car parking ticket, and as we left the car park attendant was helping patients waiting for a space.

We went straight on to Vision Express in High Wycombe’s Eden centre and saw one of the dispensing opticians there called Charlotte. She was incredbibly helpful and able to advise me on the best brand of glasses and let him try a few on. His glasses are now on order and within a week he will be able to go in and collect them.

Due to my experience yesterday I am feel reassured that the rest of our journey will be a good one and that we will be supported. A thumbs up to Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust’s Amersham Hospital staff and Vision Express High Wycombe for the excellent treatment and customer service!

It is always good that we share our positive experiences as our health and social care providers can learn so much from them!
