Have you ever read anything and not had a clue what it all meant? Not because the topic itself is difficult, but because of the use of acronyms and complicated words make even the most basic sentences sound like another language. When I started at Healthwatch I barely knew what CCG stood for let alone meant! So we’ve put together a list of some of the words, acronyms and abbreviations which have confused us over time and tried to translate them or explain them in a way which is easier for ordinary folk like us to understand.

CCG – stands for ‘Clinical Commissioning Group’, there are two of these in Buckinghamshire; Aylesbury Vale CCG and Chiltern CCG. The NHS website describes CCGs as “clinically led statutory NHS bodies responsible for the planning and commissioning of health care services for their local area”.  So what does that actually mean? It means that they buy the services that we use such as; A&E, outpatient services,  maternity services and community health services.

Enter & View – one of our own phrases which refers to the action of entering a health or social care environment, and looking at what is going on in the service at that moment in time. An Enter and View volunteer is someone who performs this activity. If you would like to become and Enter & View Volunteer please contact: volunteering@healthwatchbucks.co.uk

PPG – stands for ‘Patient Participation Group’ – a group made up of patients, GPs and their practice who to work together and improve the care and services provided by the practice. To find out more about patient participation please click here.

If a medical professional is using language and words that confuse you or that you don’t understand, ask them to explain again. You have the right to know what is going on with your health. If Healthwatch Bucks is also using words which are confusing or if you have questions about other phrases/words used in health and social care please let us know so we can do some more jargon busting!
