The project will involve the set up of groups for three practices that do not currently have a PPG and a more general package of support to other practices.

All practices are now required to have a PPG. These groups feeding back to practice management on issues that are important to the patient community. The groups often consist of a small standing committee with a wider network of members who are kept in touch by newsletter and other communications. PPGs not only offer practices the opportunity to gain feedback from patients, they offer a route to embed the practice within the local community and often provide support to events such as flu clinics. A thriving PPG will be vital for all practice in the years to come, with the health services moving towards a strategy of ‘self management’ for patients with long term conditions, the open and constructive relationship between the practice and the community they serve will be ever more vital.

Healthwatch Bucks would like to strengthen the culture of patient engagement by ensuring that it is effective at a practice level. Over the coming months we will be working with GP member practices to achieve this. Our support service will help to:

  • increase awareness of PPGs
  • increase engagement with the practice’s patient community
  • make a positive impact on services delivered by the practice
  • support PPGs to take ownership for their operations
